ABOUT US
OUR STORY
In 2020, everyone’s lives took an unexpected change. Because we were already able to work from home, we were able to take time to enjoy the outdoors around the country with our horses. There had been a long-term desire to have a family compound. This led us to our search for property and to the beautiful Red Lick Valley. As soon as we saw the property we were in love and before long we moved from Michigan.
In buying the property, our goal was to put the property to good use and share its beauty and history with others. Thus, Red Haven Farm, LLC was formed, and we began renovating the run-down farm. Our rentals were updated or built, and we began growing the amount of livestock we pasture on our farm. We strive to raise our animals as humanely and organically as possible. They are raised on pasture and lovingly cared for.
ABOUT THE OWNERS
The farm is owned and run by Sandy Ross and Martin Caruana. Sandy had a career as a “number-cruncher” working as an actuary and executive at various insurance companies. She retired from the corporate life in mid-2025. Martin owns his own IT consulting business, Your Web Help. He is partially retired allowing him time to care for the farm.
Sandy has three adult children. Ryan Ross lives in Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan with degrees in math and computer science. Parker Ross graduated from Michigan State and lives in Pittsburgh working in Finance. Lauren Ross lives on the farm and graduated from UK with a degree in animal sciences. She truly loves her time at the farm and has goals of becoming a vet! Martin has a daughter, Lyn, who lives in Canada.
OUR PRACTICES
We strive to have a beautiful farm that is healthy for us, our animals, and our guests. Our animals are raised on pasture with very little grain supplements. USDA defines pasture-raised as greater than 50%. We far exceed that since ours our 95-100% on pasture or in the woods. Therefore, we focus on healthy pastures and rotate the animals to provide for sustainability. They have access to clean, public drinking water and are provided with extra minerals and supplements. We do not use animal by-products, growth hormones, or antibiotics unless absolutely necessary.
Our animals are our family. We thoroughly enjoy our time breeding and raising them. We have chosen these breeds for their ease of raising, meat quality, and the pure joy of working with them. They really do make us smile. We spend time daily interacting with them through petting, grooming, and feeding.
